Couple centre of it all within Currie Barracks

March 23, 2013 - Calgary Herald

Norm Chow and his wife, Amy, work on opposite ends of the city.

She’s in northwest Calgary, while Norm’s office is down south. “We needed something more in-between — something more central,” says Norm.

The Chows were in the market and had their hearts set on a newly-built home. “It’s a rare opportunity to build in a central community. That just doesn’t come up right now. All the new communities are on the outskirts of Calgary.”

Well, not all the new communities. In fact, a development located close to the core captured both community of the year and new community of the year at last year’s Calgary Region Sales and Marketing (SAM) Awards.

The neighbourhood is an 80.9-hectare property and the third site of Canadian Forces Base Calgary developed by Canada Lands Co. It’s located in the city’s southeast near Garrison Woods and Garrison Green, the first two phases of redevelopment by the company. “Currie Barracks fit that bill perfectly,” says Norm. The Chows were among the first home buyers at Currie Barracks, moving in two years ago.

They bought a 3,000-square-foot, three-storey home with four bedrooms by Greenboro Homes. The home has a detached garage with a carriage house that the Chows rent as an apartment to a friend...

"Style" brings renowned expertise to a broader market

May 11, 2012 - Greenboro Homes

Who says that well designed and well built homes should only be reserved for those Calgarians with less modest means?

Greenboro Homes, renowned for it's high-end move-up and estate homes, will be launching a new line of homes under the Greenboro Style brand on May 12th, 2012, coinciding with the launch of United Communities' Nolan Hill project. The goal is to focus on affordability without compromising design and quality.

Greenboro Style's initial model portfolio will consist of two-storey and split-level detached laned homes and two-storey front attached garage homes. With square footages ranging from 1083 to 1752 sq.ft. on the detached product, and 1927 to 2202 sq.ft. on the attached product, the lineup offers options that cater to most every family's needs.

"At the start of the range, the real standout model for us is the Burberry," says Kyle Friesen, General Manager. "Walking into the home, you'd be hard-pressed to tell it's only 1083 square feet on the main and upper levels." Designed as a front-to-back split, an uncommon sight in Calgary in recent years, Greenboro took advantage of the fact that the main floor is dropped relative to the bedroom levels to add a much-appreciated, and very noticeable, 12' high ceiling to the open concept main level.

Accepting the option to develop out the bottom two levels, or taking advantage of this flexibility on your own at a later date when you need additional room to grow, results in the total square footage climbing to 1881 sq.ft. – an enticing proposition for a home beginning in the $330s.

The Cascara, the other model making its debut in the show home parade, is a more traditional configuration, but has also benefitted from the thought put into how its future homeowners will use the spaces offered. A spacious foyer – unusual in the starter market – greets homeowners and their guests warmly. And the detailing, from the front entry bench that allows for more comfortable removal of shoes to the mudroom lockers that provide a perfect place for the kids to end their school day, compliment the lifestyle-focused layout.

"It's about distilling the foundations of Greenboro design into homes that make you think, ‘Wow, that's smart. Why doesn't everyone do this?'"

View available lot inventory and check out the new models on the Nolan Hill community page, or take a tour through some of the many homes we've built in our Photo Gallery.

Holmes' Homes get celebrity inspection

July 22, 2011 - Calgary Herald

Mike Holmes is living in Hotel California.

Like the 1977 Eagles’ hit song, once you’re in you can’t get out — and that’s exactly what the popular contractor and TV personality says about his mission to transform the way homes are built.

"My job is to keep doing this (changing specifications of homes and modifying the way they are built) until all homes are built better," he says during a recent tour in Calgary to inspect one of the homes built under his new Holmes Approved Homes program.

"By doing that, we’ll all live longer and help the environment at the same time."

Holmes' Canadian-wide building program was launched in Calgary in March, naming four builders who are going to be building Holmes Approved Homes…
